In 1983, a few moments before a beautiful specimen of yacht was about to round a buoy and win a race, my Dad came and woke my sisters and I up and we sat on our parents bed and watched the last few minutes of the first America's Cup race to be won by an Australian boat. That was the day Bob Hawke said "bum" and wore a loud, patriotic suit. The boat, Australia II was skippered by John Bertrand and this is the story of his sailing life. Breathy cover descriptions (stirring, dramatic, unflinching) and the excessive wealth that this level of yacht racing warrants, this is a version of nautica extrema that I enjoy. It's a slightly tatty hardcover but check out the fella's grin!
