Often sited as a forerunning of the broad contemporary genre science fiction, this prescient novel written in 1932 has people taking a drug called soma to ensure that they experience the world in a positive way, a drug that takes away concerns, morals even - and accordingly the people are no threat to a status quo. The status quo is a completely controlled world (with a renegade people still living in the borderlands). The novel still sings, still zings, almost a century since it was first published and is another ‘should read’ – and definitely enjoyable too. This copy has some notes inside, a bit of underlining and is a little foxed, but the binding is solid.
