Alexis Wright can do no wrong, I could read her everyday, as I reckon I could read Lydia Davis everyday. She did for Northern Australia, an especially indigenous Northern Australia, what Garcia Marquez did for not only Colombia, but the whole of South America (or actually, the North of South America with massive clitoral tendrils right up into Central America). This novel travels through a world where magic is melded so closely with reality that I would never suppose to guess, and nor did I need to, sinking as I did into this magnificent book. Plus it's published by Giramondo and I adore pretty much everything they publish.
Alexis Wright is an exception, perpicious, magical, mythical writer and this dense and wild book set in Northern Australia is my favourite of hers. Not for the faint hearted, but Wright can heal with a turn of phrase.
