The Luminaries won the Booker Prize in 2013 and it is the second novel from Kiwi writer, Eleanor Catton. It is a wild west Kiwi mystery set in a nascent gold mining town called Hokitika and it spins around a planetary and astrological framework. There is love, deception, intrigue and opium and it is 826 pages long and worth every word. When I bought my copy I spilt my water bottle over it and it took about a week to dry and before I could start reading it. This is not that copy! (it is a book I have chosen to keep, it's a riot). Think Deadwood meets The Bone People.
