The Wind-up Bird Chronicle by Haruki Murakami
This was my 'in' to Murakami, my gateway Murakami. Layered and weird and both arcane and familiar, he took me deep into subconscious musings. One of my favourite characters in literature, Mr Nakata, is from Murakami's mind. He is the man who speaks to cats in Kafka on the Shore, which I have just put in the 'free book' shop out the front of my house... do I regret it... could I have spun myself a few dollars out of it... yeah, nah.
Anyway, Lovely Vintage edition (this design and layout is excellent for long fiction - 601 pages - and still pliable and light in your palms... love it!).
Translated by Jay Rubin, thank you Jay.
