'Seriously delighted to bring you my first Flanagan, a lovely compact hardcover edition of Wanting. This is a dark story, based on real people. Those people are Mathinna a young aboriginal girl adopted by Sir John and Lady Jane Franklin. Mathinna is imortalised in an image painted by Thomas Bock in 1842 that, when it was framed, neatly and disingeniously covered her bare feet. It recounts her tragic life and Franklin's disappearance in the Arctic. Dickens makes a cameo, as Lady Jane had sequestered him to help raise awareness of the plight of her husband, who she refused to believe was dead. Flanagan writes so beautifully.
First edition of a far from limited print run. You should have seen the piles of them for sale.
Won the Tasmanian Book Prize in 2011.
Slightly foxed and scuffed but it has an inbuilt ribbon bookmark (a 'ribbon marker' being the prosaic technical name).
