this gorgeous pinky-red hardcover with silken pages is an annotated version of Samuel Pepys' diaries from 1661- 1669. He was a prolific diarist and we are lucky that he was witty as well as a good observer. Random line drawings, a little bedraggled, but this volume has a fine heft and can be opened on mirthful reflections or gripes, like an oracle.
